Well, as of last week, these answers are "YES"! The leadership at Santuario met with us, and we now have a start date! January 3, 2012, we will begin bringing drinkable water to El Tanque, through the water purification ministry that Santuario has been running for a while. Now, through the church dropping their price to 10 pesos per 5 gallon bottle, and us paying 10 pesos per bottle for transportation, we'll be able to charge the Haitians only 20 pesos. Right now they are paying anywhere from 30-45 pesos.
This is a big encouragement for me, as I REALLY wanted to see this get off the ground before I leave, Dec. 21st.
There are a few start up costs, and transportation costs, that I would love to see US cover (yes, YOU, yes, ME!)
1. We need to supply at least 50 new bottles for Santuario. Each bottle is 130 pesos, or about $3.50. So that is a total of about $175.00.
2. We have committed to provide the transportation for the initial three months. Afterwards, however, we hope to see Santuario step up and really take ownership of this project. The cost for gas is $80.00 per month, so a total of $240.00.
This is do-able! And this is sustainable! Partnering with the locals gives us hope that this will continue on.
