He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry.
The Lord frees the prisoners.
The Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are weighed down.
The Lord loves the godly.
The Lord protects the foreigners among us.
He cares for the orphans and widows, but he frustrates the plans of the wicked.
Especially in light of all that is going on in Haiti, I said, “Come on, God. I want to see more of this!” Immediately Psalm 82 popped in my head. Psalm 82: 1-5 says:
God stands in the congregation of the mighty;
He judges among the gods.
“How long will you judge unjustly,
And show partiality to the wicked?
Defend the poor and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and needy.
Deliver the poor and needy;
Free them from the hand of the wicked.
They do not know, nor do they understand;
They walk about in darkness;
All the foundations of the earth are unstable.”
This reminds me that it’s OUR JOB to be God’s hand and feet here on earth. Here, God says in this Psalm to his people, who’s primary job is to be in authority for the public good, “YOU do it! Defend! Do! Deliver!” God has given his authority over to his people. What are WE doing with it?
WE can give justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry.
WE can help free prisoners from guilt and shame by introducing then to the Load Bearer.
WE literally can open the eyes of the blind.
WE can lift up in prayer those who are weighed down.
