In all the times I've come to New York City, I've never yet LOVED it the way that my sister does. She loves the life here in the city. So I decided maybe I need to just take a day, walk around, taste, smell, hear and see the different things about the Big Apple that makes it so---intoxicating.
Walking to my personalized soundtrack of La Roux, Corinne Bailey Rae and Talian Rayne, I began touring the Manhattan Streets. I passed two little boys, not more than 5 years old, standing on a street corner talking enthusiastically by themselves, using hand gestures too advanced for their age. Carefully crossing the street, even though I had the "go" with the walking sign, I noticed a couple standing in a perfect pose of love looking with admiration and awe ---at their iPhone. Hussling into the Hummus Kitchen before it rained was a wonderful decision, as just minutes later the skies opened up in torrential rains, landing on the hot black top, creating steam.
I ate Egyptian hummus with a whole wheat pita, and savored every bite of couscous with olive oil, tomatoes, and the key ingredient--MINT! Because I savored every bite, I quickly became too full. So I wrapped it up, and continued the walk. Walking on the street "Museum Mile" is not misleading in anyway...as I ended up at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. There I learned that Ancient Egyptian shoes are in style today, Picasso actually did many different styles of art, AND that I have low appreciation for the "knick knacks" in museums, but rather only really enjoy modern paintings!
After all this walking, I needed a break. I took this break in the mother of all break spots in NYC--Central Park. I found my way to the conservatory garden, took off my shoes, and read a while. It was ironic that the thing to stick out to me the MOST from the chapter I was reading was "God, give me the eyes to see... (fill in the blank)." My day in NYC, with new eyes and intent to SEE the place, brought SUCH a deeper appreciation of it!
Take time to SEE what's around and before you... and perhaps you will find new things about it that will make you love it just a little bit more.
